I’m almost a year into freelancing and I’m getting paid more than I would have if I had gone with a permanent job. I’ve also been very lucky and have been contracting at the same place for 10 months. I’m sure it would be a different story had I jumped from company to company.

The disadvantages are clear though and I know them only too well, having taken time off when my son was born and then staying home to help my sick girlfriend. If you’re sick, need to take time out or a holiday - you don’t get paid. In fact I think I’m going to take less holidays now as all I can think of is the money I’m missing out on…
